Application/Handwriting Recognition Senior Software Engineer
Are you excited about creating applications that run on multi–modal computing platforms? Do you dream about character and handwriting recognition in every language under the sun? Are you looking for a team of great J2ME application and platform engineers? Our J2ME application team is expanding as we step up to the challenge of making the Livescribe multi–modal computing platform go global.
Responsibilities:
- Work with a team to define and build new capabilities for handwriting recognition into our mobile computing platform and desktop applications.
- Work with our partner company – a well–known handwriting recognition company – to integrate their HR algorithms into our programs and platform in multiple human written languages.
- Work closely with SQA to ensure the development of effective test plans and test cases.
Qualifications:
- J2ME application development experience.
- Experience with Vision Objects or other handwriting recognition products.
- Experience designing system APIs and infrastructure.
- Excellent engineering design skills.
- Experience through the full software development lifecycle – at least one shipped product.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- More than 5 years of software development experience.
- BA/BS in Software Engineering or related field, or equivalent work experience.
Nice to have, but not required:
- Experience with at least one other written foreign language.
- C/C++ development experience.

Manager/Tech Lead of Web Services
Livescribe is looking for a Manager/Tech Lead of Web Services that is seeking a challenging, fast paced environment in an early stage, revenue generating, cutting edge technology company! In this key role, the Web Services Lead will help guide and support the company’s rapidly growing online community by implementing and supporting a world–class web infrastructure.
Responsibilities:
- Guide and lead a small, talented, and passionate engineering team!
- Architectural leadership: help optimize the system we have now and scale the system for the future.
- Hands on coding of the underlying foundation frameworks, and services.
- Apply your broad knowledge of object oriented technologies & designs, web services, SHARDING infrastructure.
- Utilize your in–depth knowledge of the Java platform and optimization/performance.
- Help define API’s for client application interaction (XMLRPC/SOAP/Thrift).
- Understand the build system and build dependency, Source Control (SVN).
Qualifications:
- Solid 10+ years of application development experience.
- 3+ years in direct management or similar tech leadership role.
- 5+ years of HTML/CSS/Javascript/Ajax and dynamic page generation.
- 4+ years of Unix knowledge and usage.
- Excellent Java knowledge and object oriented architecture.
- Deep knowledge of the Java platform and optimization/performance.
- Proven experience in high traffic, large scale web services/applications.
- Shipped at least 2 majors release of a large scale system .
- Fluent in SQL and Object Relational Mapping techniques (Hibernate, Cayenne or Apple Enterprise Object Frameworks).
- Web Services integration with desktop client: XML–RPC/SOAP/Thrift or other remote procedure call system.
- Solid understanding of database structure and SHARDING technologies, experience in data migration a plus.
- HTTP/HTML deep knowledge: caching techniques, performance improvement.
- Messaging bus/queuing system experience and integration with existing applications.

Corporate Counsel
We are seeking a dynamic, energetic, and hard–working individual who enjoys working both independently and collaboratively in a collegial team environment and a fast–paced legal department within a dynamic company. Livescribe is conveniently located in Oakland on 880, 10 minutes north of the 880/ San Mateo Bridge junction.
Reporting to Livescribe's Co–Founder, EVP of Corp. Development and Chief Legal Officer, the Corporate Counsel will have a high level of visibility, a wide scope of responsibilities, and a direct impact on the company's growth. The Corporate Counsel's primary responsibility will be managing Livescribe's numerous and complex commercial transactions, including drafting and negotiating distribution and reseller agreements, inbound and outbound licensing agreements, software developer agreements, manufacturing agreements, and a wide variety of other agreements.
The Corporate Counsel will be responsible for all legal and compliance matters pertaining to Livescribe's online App Store. The Corporate Counsel will also assist with Livescribe's marketing efforts, intellectual property protection, and other projects and areas as assigned by the Chief Legal Officer. Depending on need, the Corporate Counsel may also support Livescribe's litigation needs and mergers and acquisition efforts.
Responsibilities:
- Primary responsibility for negotiating and drafting inbound and outbound licenses, distribution, reseller, software developer, and other commercial agreements, that comply with company policies and risk tolerance
- Managing DMCA and other IP compliance issues related to Livescribe's online Application Store
- Assist the Chief Legal Officer with Livescribe's marketing efforts, intellectual property protection, and other projects
- Assist the Chief Legal Officer on general company compliance matters
- Respond promptly and effectively to legal requests from senior management, marketing, corporate finance and other internal clients, and advise on recommended courses of action and legal risks
- Support the continuous improvement of standard form agreements and legal processes as well as updating policies and procedures
- Train employees on legal issues and company policies
- Handle special projects as requested
Qualifications:
- Must have a JD from an accredited law school and be an active member of the California Bar
- Must have at least 4 years of relevant legal experience and demonstrated success
- Minimum of 3 years of corporate and/or commercial practice in a large law firm (200+ attorneys)
- We prefer candidates with top law firm experience and a minimum of 2 years of in–house experience with a software-focused or technology focused company
- Must have in–depth experience handling distribution, licensing, and other commercial transactions, and experience advising clients on and structuring complex commercial transactions
- Experience with issues pertaining to technology licensing, commercial law, intellectual property, patent law, privacy, online distribution of content, and/or revenue recognition is preferred
- Flexibility and willingness to work on a broad variety of legal matters
- A demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, analyze complex legal issues, and make risk assessments that are calibrated to the management team’s risk profile
- Excellent interpersonal skills, business judgment, and strategic thinking, superior work ethic, dynamic and highly team–oriented
- Well organized and able to work with cross–functional teams and manage numerous projects simultaneously under deadline pressure with a quick, high quality turn–around of deliverables
- Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team in an environment of constantly shifting priorities
- Flexibility and willingness to work on a broad variety of legal matters
- Excellent and highly developed written and verbal communication and presentation skills
- A positive attitude is a must and a sense of humor is a plus

Sr. Product Manager, International
We are seeking a candidate to fill our newly created position of Sr. Product Manager, International. The successful candidate for this position will help define and manage the product strategy for the Asian and European markets and be knowledgeable about product requirements as they pertain to internationalization and localization of high–tech consumer electronics. This individual will work internally and externally to gather requirements, synthesize them into product strategies and features, and provide leadership to other teams across the organization as they collaborate to deliver high–quality, market leading products.
A combination of product, customer, workflow and business knowledge and the ability to make the trade–offs necessary to turn concepts into concrete products is critical. The candidate must be a self–starter, with strong presentation and communications skills, and thrive in a startup environment.
Responsibilities:
- Play a lead role in defining and delivering products for the Asian and European markets
- Research, identify, prioritize and validate customers' and partners' needs and synthesize them into successful product direction and definition
- Develop International market requirements and product requirements
- Develops and maintains a working knowledge of import/export requirements for all International markets
- Work with a cross–functional team including Engineering, QA, Support, Outbound Marketing, Business Development, User Interface Design and other Product Managers
Qualifications:
A combination of business, marketing, product, technical, and industry knowledge with the ability to drive initiatives through completion is critical, including:
- 5+ years of product management experience in high–tech consumer electronics, including taking products from concept to market for International markets
- Direct experience with localization, including packaging, out–of–box experience, and software
- Experience incorporating International standards (i18n) into product requirements
- Demonstrated track record managing all aspects of a successful software or technology product throughout its lifecycle, including product strategy development, requirements definition, product marketing, and closely monitoring the business metrics
- Expertise in both written and interpersonal communication, in relationship building, and in collaboration in a cross–functional team comprised of diverse personalities, skill sets, and levels of experience
Education Requirements:
- BA or BS degree in engineering, business, computer science or related field
- MBA degree and international experience is highly desirable
