About the Menu Button

The Menu button is a paper-based, five-way navigator that you can use to navigate the Main Menu on your smartpen.
You can use the Menu button to locate apps, settings, and commands on your smartpen.

Tapping the up arrow or the area around it is called tapping up on the Menu button. Tapping the right arrow or the area around it is called tapping right on the Menu button. Likewise, we speak of tapping down and tapping left. You can also tap and double-tap on the center of the Menu button, where the word Menu is printed.

The table below summarizes ways you can use the Menu button.

Tap Center

After starting your smartpen or when you are writing notes without recording, tap the center of the Menu button to go to the Main Menu.

If you are running an app, single-tapping returns you to the app’s menu.

Double-Tap Center

If you are using an app other than Paper Replay, double-tap on the center of a Menu button quits the current app and returns your smartpen to the Main Menu. This activates the Quick Commands mode so you can write an app name or command.

If you are navigating an app’s menu, double-tapping the center of the Menu button returns to the Main Menu. The one exception is if you are recording with Paper Replay. In that case, double-tapping the center returns to the Main Menu, but background recording continues.

Tap Down

Tap down on the Menu button to scroll through a menu or a list of commands or options.

Tap Up

Tap up on the Menu button to scroll through a menu or a list of commands or options.

Tap Right

Tap right for the following:

  • select an item in the app menu; this may access a submenu or sublist of options.
  • play audio or view items (such as a translation, description, or a chord).
  • answer Yes to a question displayed on the smartpen screen.

Tap Left

Tap left for the following:

  • return to a previous menu or list.
  • exit an app's menus or lists and return you to the Main Menu (may require several left taps).
  • answer No to a question displayed on the smartpen screen.
