James Fallows: Pulse is ‘My New Favorite Gadget’

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

So how does it feel when Pulse is named “my new favorite gadget” by James Fallows, acclaimed author, former speechwriter for President Jimmy Carter, and correspondent for The Atlantic? Good enough to brag about!

In an article for The Atlantic, James asked, “Where was this thing when I got started in journalism many eons ago???” He added, “being able to use this device as of 2009 is a lot better than never having found it at all.” Thanks, James!

I recently bought a new Pulse Smartpen-the technology is amazing.

I never thought I would benefit from a pen that not only writes, but also records voices, has a video camera, translates to multiple languages, calculates and has up to 2 GB of memory. I’ll never again take pages of notes and forget what I was hearing at the time.

With the way Pulse works, McGyver would be envious. It’s now been several weeks since getting my new pen. I’ve demonstrated it to many people, and I’ve been very focused on my note taking in meetings and during sales presentations.

So what’s my take on the new pen?

My new pen is just another sign of the rapid pace of technology changing the way we do business. But no matter how small the tool, or sophisticated the technology, at the end of it all - we still have paper.

I continue to have important contracts that need to be signed, documents to be shared, and pages upon pages of important notes. And now I have a nifty little pen to make sure I don’t forget anything.

How They Use Pulse: Jon Dale, SAMBA

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

As the self-appointed Minister of Really Cool Gadgets here at SAMBA (Seth Godin’s Alternative MBA Program), I get to try out lots of exciting new toys. Sorry, I mean “productivity tools. ” Seth just returned from TED, where he received a Livescribe Pulse smartpen.

I have to say this is one of the best gadgets I’ve ever played with.  Pulse is slightly thicker than a regular pen and is used with special notebooks.  The notebooks are very reasonably priced and are available from Amazon/Target or directly from Livescribe.  I just ordered a couple of Moleskine-like notebooks specifically designed for Pulse.

Here are some of the benefits of the Pulse smartpen:

Livescribe Desktop can search and highlight words within my handwritten notes

I use the smartpen every day while taking notes in our sessions.  It’s completely changed the way I takes notes.  I don’t worry about getting all the details, just the key concepts, because I know I’m able go back and listen to exactly what I was hearing at any point in my notes.

I won’t be giving Pulse back to Seth any time soon.

Livescribe Desktop for Mac Version 1.1 Now Available

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

We’re pleased to announce the release of Livescribe Desktop for Mac version 1.1. This release incorporates optimizations, bug fixes and functionality upgrades to improve the Livescribe Desktop experience for our Mac users.

Here’s an outline of the new additions included in the 1.1 release (click here for the full release notes):

  • Get info for a thumbnail: Get info is a panel available in Thumbnail view that shows the user what recordings are available on the selected page.
  • Delete an archived notebook: After a notebook has been archived, it can be deleted. This is the same two-step process used for removing a recording from your Pulse smartpen, then deleting a recording from Livescribe Desktop.
  • Preference to turn backgrounds on/off: A global preference that allows the user to show or hide backgrounds for viewing within Livescribe Desktop, exporting as PDF, or copying and pasting into other applications.
  • Choose multiple recordings for deletion: Users can choose and delete multiple files at once.
  • Contextual menus: Added contextual menus for common tasks involving notebooks, thumbnails, recordings or single page view.
  • Keyboard shortcuts: Expanded keyboard shortcuts to include all common tasks.

Pulse smartpen vs. Regular pen

Monday, March 31st, 2008

In January, we posted several Pulse demo videos that show different features of the smartpen and how it works.

While filming these videos, we had a few extra minutes to spare and made a goofy vignette comparing a Pulse smartpen with a regular pen (played by Zac, our multi-talented graphic designer). Probably not ready for prime time - but we thought we’d pass it along.

3/28 Update from CEO Jim Marggraff

Friday, March 28th, 2008

Greetings,

I would like to thank the thousands of readers, writers, bloggers, callers, developers, scribers and buyers for your support and interest in our Pulse smartpen and platform.

We have been overwhelmed with requests for information and preorders for Pulse that have far exceeded our early projections.

As this demand has accelerated in the past month, we have continued working towards our first shipment date of March 31st, and have struggled to determine how to address preorders that far exceed our early production ramp. We noted Amazon’s approach to handling shipment for their high-demand Kindle e-book, and ongoing Wii shortages, and have compared this to our own challenge, as a new company, to address our backlog.

In retrospect, our hiatus in our communication is long overdue. I apologize for this. As I considered posting a blog entry numerous times, new concerns regarding growing demand arose, as well as meeting our growing backlog. Perhaps we were overly cautious in not wanting to send an ambiguous message.

The time for ambiguity is past.

I am delighted to announce that we will begin shipping in limited volume on March 31st, as targeted.

To address our backlog, we will open the Livescribe Store only to our preorder list of customers, enabling you to immediately place a credit card order on Monday. At that time, we will provide you with an estimated shipment date based upon when you first preordered your smartpen. If you are already on our preorder list, look for an email on Monday, March 31st with instructions on how to complete your order.

Thanks again for you patience! We look forward to welcoming you to the Livescribe community.

Best regards,

Jim

Journals for Pulse

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Good news! We’ve heard your request for a smaller journal option with your Pulse smartpen, so we’ve accelerated our production efforts to offer a hard-bound leather journal (5.5 x 8.25 inches) for customers that prefer something smaller than a college-sized notebook. These journals, along with college ruled notebooks and other Pulse accessories, will be available for sale on www.livescribe.com in March.

Here’s a sneak preview of what the journal looks like:

Livescribe journals will be offered as a 2-pack for $24.95. There will be a lined and unlined version.

Thanks for your feedback!
