Using the Pulse Smartpen in the Classroom: Steven Silverman, High School Teacher

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Educators within the Livescribe Community are continuously developing  new and creative ways to use the Pulse smartpen for teaching and student learning in their classrooms. Here’s just one example from Steve Silverman, a physics teacher at Chatham High School in New Jersey.

As a physics teacher, Mr. Silverman has his students do a lot of labs and solve thousands of problems. When he stands at a whiteboard, the kids tend to fall asleep. With the Pulse smartpen, he can write out the answers to problems when the kids aren’t around and post them on Livescribe Online. The school has a mobile computer cart that comes to Mr. Silverman’s room once a week so they can check answers at their own pace and listen to the explanations. This helps his students learn at their own pace and also allows them to have access to his explanations outside of the classroom.

Physics teacher Steve Silverman uses the Pulse smartpen to capture his problem-set explanations and later posts them online for his students to review and replay.

“As soon as I saw the Pulse smartpen, I knew it could really change the way I teach,” said Mr. Silverman. “The kids love it that they can check answers at their own place rather than listening to me talk away at the chalkboard all day.”

Tips and Tricks: Uploading to the Livescribe Community

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Welcome to the first in a series of posts designed to help you get the most of your Pulse smartpen! These walkthroughs will guide you through features you may not have discovered yet, or reveal a handy trick you didn’t even know your smartpen could do!

This month it’s back to basics as we show you how easy it is to upload your notes and drawings to the Livescribe Community from Livescribe Desktop from Windows. If you have any tips and tricks to share or suggest, please email Karen at klee @ livescribe.com. Enjoy!

Uploading to the Livescribe Community
Once you transfer all your notes and recordings from your Pulse smartpen to Livescribe Desktop, you have the option to upload either sessions (notes and recordings) or pages (just notes) to the Livescribe Community.

Step 1:
Once you’ve launched Livescribe Desktop, go to “Page Viewer” mode (near the top left of the Livescribe Desktop window). Double-click on a page of your notes. Click on your notes to see your notes animate and hear the recorded audio.

Step 2:
To share these notes, locate the two “Upload” buttons (near the top left of the Livescribe Desktop window). Click “Upload Sessions” to upload both notes and audio or click “Upload Pages” to upload just the written notes. (Note: If you haven’t created a Livescribe Community account yet, you’ll be asked to do so.)

Step 3:
Click on “Livescribe Online” (located in the upper right corner) to view your uploaded files in your My Livescribe page. From there, you can manage and share your notes, drawings, and recordings as Flash movies or PDF files.

Capturing Moments with your Pulse Smartpen

Monday, January 19th, 2009

We’ve heard countless stories from people from all walks of life about how they use their Pulse smartpen and enjoyed discovering the unique ways they have incorporated Pulse into their everyday lives, both personally and professionally.

Take a look at our Livescribe Online Community, and you’ll see all types of pencasts - from a tutorial on how to write Chinese characters to a drawing review of “The Wiz” - that people have captured and shared using their Pulse smartpen.

Thanks to your feedback and suggestions, we’re creating a new category called “Moments” on our Livescribe Community for all those special never-miss-a-word pencasts.

Speaking of special moments, January 20th marks a memorable and historical moment for our country as we inaugurate our nations’ 44th President, Barack Obama. We encourage you to use your Pulse smartpen to capture your inaugural experience and share it with the Livescribe Community. If we pick your pencast as one our five favorites, we’ll send you a little thank you gift.

Tomorrow, we’ll have a few people capturing and sharing their key inauguration moments nationwide from Washington D.C. to Dallas to our headquarters here in Oakland, California.

Beyond the inauguration, we hope you’ll share your unique uses, stories, and memories in the “Moments” section in the Livescribe Community.

Pulse Smartpen is Now Publicly Available

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Thanks for your patience as we finished taking orders from our preorder customers. Starting today, the Pulse smartpen is now available to the public via our online store at www.livescribe.com.

Current shipment estimates are roughly 4-6 weeks from your date of purchase, and are subject to change based on demand. So order now - and never miss a word again!

You’ll also notice this week that we’ve changed our website here and there. One of the things we are trying to do is improve our responsiveness to the Livescribe community. To that end, we are modifying our company blog to a post-only format, and encouraging questions, suggestions, and feedback from our customers moving forward in our Customer Support forums.

Please check out our forum page at www.livescribe.com/support and continue to send us your comments and suggestions.
