New Feature for Livescribe Desktop for Windows: Creating a Custom Notebook

Now you can arrange and organize your notes by creating custom notebooks on Livescribe Desktop. Custom notebooks allow you to combine pages of notes from different notebooks into a single custom notebook. The notes that you include in a custom notebook will still remain in their original notebook on Livescribe Desktop. To create a custom notebook, follow these instructions or watch the video below:

1. Go to the left side navigation (where your notebooks are listed with Livescribe Desktop) and click on the Create a new Custom Notebook.

2. Name your custom notebook.

3. Select the pages you wish to include in your custom notebook.

4. Drag and drop the pages to your custom notebook. Or, right-click and select Add to Custom Notebook. From there you can select what custom notebook to add the pages to.

Once you create a custom notebook, you can create a printable PDF file of your notes or upload the pages online to your Livescribe account. Click here for more information about custom notebooks.

Livescribe Customers Share Creative Ways They Use Their Pulse Smartpens

We LOVE hearing how you are using your Pulse smartpens… We all know that Pulse is a great tool for note taking, but it really can be so much more…

Perfect example … Artist Ali Sabet popped by our booth at Macworld to tell us how the Pulse smartpen has changed the way he works. We have mentioned Ali on our Facebook fan page, but we thought his use of the Pulse smartpen was so cool, we wanted to tell you more.

Ali uses his smartpen to sketch drawings in his Livescribe unlined journal. These sketches are then turned into cartoons that become colorful works of art. Ali starts by exporting his pages from Livescribe Desktop as PDF files. Then he opens them with Adobe Illustrator to add color. Once the sketches are colorful enough, he exports them as PDFs and embeds them in Web pages and on his blogs. He literally colors in the doodles from his notebook and makes them come to life – the whole process takes less than an hour! Livescribe Pencasts: Help with Homework… Here’s how!

High school math teacher, Angie Treadway uses pencasts to help her students conquer math.

Have your kids ever come home with a daunting assignment you have no idea how to help with? Are you a student trying to remember how to work out a tough homework assignment?

Check out how Livescribe evangelist and high school math teacher, Angie Treadway from Breaux Bridge High School in Louisiana is using her Pulse smartpen and pencasts to help her students conquer math.

Each day in class Angie records her lessons using her Pulse smartpen. She uploads the audio and handwritten notes as pencasts to walk students through daily math equations, explaining how to solve the problems as she goes along. Students can access the pencasts from home to recap the lesson and essentially have a private tutor each night as they complete homework assignments.

Angie tells us, “Students love the fact that if they missed a moment or two of the in-class lesson they can quickly recap. They also love the fact that they can access the lesson from home if they are ill, and they come back to class ready to continue with the class rather than trailing behind. Parents LOVE the pencast because it helps them to help their students.”

Angie’s teaching methods have been so well received that the school board in Saint Martin Parish asked her to present her use of the Pulse smartpen and pencasts at the Louisiana Association of Computer Using Educators (LACUE) Technology Conference.

As you may know, we launched an Application Challenge just before the holidays and a group of awesome developers have been hard at work ever since. More than 45 education, productivity and entertainment apps were submitted to the Challenge and now we need your help picking a favorite!

Want a say in which developer wins $5,000 cash? Here’s what you need to do:

Check out the contest Web site, watch the short video entries and click on the “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” rating icon to vote. You can vote for as many entries as you want, so don’t worry about picking just one favorite!

The entry that receives the most “thumbs up” ratings overall will become the People’s Choice Grand Prize Winner, and its developer will score the $5,000 cash prize. Top entries in each category – education, productivity and entertainment – will each receive $500 cash.

Last but not least, a panel of editors from well-known technology outlets around the world are reviewing the submissions behind-the-scenes. The Expert Panel Grand Prize Winner will also receive $5,000. Who knows, maybe one lucky developer will nab both $5,000 prizes?

Let your vote be heard (as many times as you like) and stay tuned for the results, which will be announced in early April.

How They Use the Pulse smartpen: An Audio Learner from Canada

60% of Pulse smartpen users say that Pulse has changed their life—and we love hearing about how the smartpen has helped make life better, easier, and more productive for our customers. We received a note from Cantina Leggo from Canada with a touching story about how her daughter’s life changed with the Pulse smartpen.

Cantina’s fourteen-year-old daughter had been told her entire “academic” life that she wasn’t the average student—she excelled in music, the arts, drama, and English but was below average in math, science, history, and geography. After taking a test, she learned that she was considered an “audio learner.”

Cantina participated in a course and spotted a Pulse smartpen user in the room. After her first sighting of the smartpen, Cantina began hearing about the cool tool from friends in her circle and through acquaintances. She knew she had to try one out, especially if it could help her daughter in school. She said, “I knew it would change my daughter’s life in regards to her frustration and stress that she has experienced continuously in her classroom environment and perhaps be the answer to our prayers!”

At the time, Cantina was not able to purchase the smartpen in her Canadian province. “This did not prevent me from utilizing my resources and in no time we found a Pulse smartpen,” she said. “What a transformation! We noticed an instant improvement with her homework, tests and more importantly; her self-confidence!”

CBS 19 Charlottesville Talks About Pulse’s UVA Efficacy Studies

We posted a blog entry this January on the University of Virginia’s efficacy studies using the Pulse smartpen. Tiffani Sargent, a reporter from CBS 19 in Charlottesville, discusses with Stephanie Moore how the smartpen works and how UVa is working with Livescribe to develop advanced features and uses for the smartpen for both professors and students.

Some examples include:
• Students can submit their homework digitally using their smartpen.
• Professors can grade papers and provide audio feedback to students using the smartpen.
