Pulse: Your Summer Travel Companion

June 30th, 2010

It’s summer and we’re excited to share how Pulse is a great travel companion for your vacation!

Headed to a foreign country this summer? Need a cheat sheet with some key phrases to help you feel like more of a local? No problema – travel apps for Pulse are available in many languages, including Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Each app provides a simple way to learn to speak over 100 foreign language travel phrases, including important topics ranging from transportation to food and drink.

Interested in more apps you can use on your trip? With the tap of pen to paper the American Heritage® Spanish Dictionary makes learning a language easy. By simply writing a word in English, Pulse will both show you the translation on the smartpen’s display and say it so you can hear the correct pronunciation. New apps like Tipper, can easily calculate the amount you should tip your server, while games like Blackjack, Video Poker and Hangman help pass the time on a long road trip or plane ride. Check out Livescribe’s Beta Application store for even more apps.

The Pulse smartpen also makes it easy to record vacation memories in a virtual scrapbook that you can email to friends and family. Summer travelers are also bound to appreciate the portability of this dependable and light-weight travel companion.

Already planning to use the Pulse smartpen during your summer travel? Let us know how on Facebook or Twitter. You can also visit Livescribe’s website for our summer sale discounts for 50% off select accessories.

Milestone: Livescribe Reaches ½ Million Pencasts

June 14th, 2010

Livescribe is excited to share a recent milestone in the company’s history… We have hit the ½ Million Pencast mark! That means over 500,000 unique pencasts have been uploaded to the Livescribe Community since we officially announced the technology just over a year ago. This is exciting news, considering we’ve seen an enormous spike in pencasting the last couple months.

In honor of this exciting milestone, we’d like to highlight a few fun pencasts we’ve seen along the way.

Check out this pencast from a Popular Mechanics interview with SpaceX vice president Tom Mueller describing how the merlin rocket engine works and this pencast featuring illustrations of Star Wars characters. The City of Sacramento uses pencasts to share their Town Hall Meeting notes, and we’ve also seen many teachers, like Sue Glascoe, using pencasts to help students with their homework by sharing online modules of their lessons – word for word, diagram by diagram. Additionally, pencasts are used in the university setting and this pencast from a Purdue University student details how to solve mechanical engineering problems.

Interested in even more? This avid smartpen user described Geoffrey Moore’s Crossing the Chasm concept in this pencast and several Pencast interviews were even recorded at the 2009 New York Comic Convention (Spiderman pencast, Ninja Turtle pencast, Joker pencast).

Additionally, many business professionals are sharing their pencasts of meeting notes, client briefs and more privately with colleagues or clients.

Want to upload some of your favorites, but aren’t sure how? Take a look at this blog post for some tips and tricks. If you have a pencast you’d like us to feature, send us a message on Facebook, Twitter or to press@livescribe.com.

Thanks for helping us reach this exciting milestone!

Livescribe Wins AEP Golden Lamp and Distinguished Achievement Award

June 10th, 2010

We are excited to announce that Livescribe has won both a Golden Lamp and a Distinguished Achievement Award from the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP). This is the first time that one company has won AEP’s two top awards in technology. One of the largest and longest-running award programs for educational products, the AEP Awards have honored exceptional resources for teaching and learning for more than four decades.

According to AEP the Golden Lamp is the gold standard for educational products. Only four Golden Lamps are awarded each year – one for Curriculum, one for Periodicals, one for Professional Development, and one for Technology & New Media. The 2010 Golden Lamp was presented to Livescribe in the Technology & New Media category.

The Distinguished Achievement Awards (DAAs) recognize the year’s top educational products in the same four categories (Curriculum, Periodicals, Professional Development, and Technology & New Media), but are judged only against products in their entry category, subcategory and grade level. Livescribe was recognized as the 2010 DAA winner in the Technology & New Media, administrative tools category.

Livescribe was selected as a winner by a two-tiered judging process made up of highly qualified industry experts. Winners were announced at an awards banquet on Tuesday during AEP’s Annual Content in Context Conference (CIC) at the Capital Hilton in Washington D.C.

Check out the Golden Lamp Award Announcement on YouTube.

Calling all Inventors, Tinkerers and Makers!

June 2nd, 2010

Were you at the Maker Faire Bay Area 2010 last weekend in San Mateo? We were and it was great! With over 70,000 attendees, we enjoyed seeing everyone who stopped by the Livescribe booth. In case you missed it, here’s a snapshot of Livescribe’s Maker Faire experience.

Livescribe customer and artist Ali Sabet held “hyper creativity” demos throughout the day in our booth. We have talked about Ali on the blog before and we were thrilled to have him in our booth demonstrating the Pulse smartpen. He created custom sketches on pre-printed dot paper for attendees and then used each drawing to create a pencast for attendees to view online. To see example pencasts from the Maker Faire, take a look here.

Ali Sabet demos the Pulse smartpen at Livescribe’s booth.

For any aspiring developers out there, a Livescribe senior staff engineer also showed attendees how to create a simple application for the Pulse smartpen using Livescribe developer tools. The session called, “”Creating Interactive Paper with the Livescribe Smartpen Platform” provided a great way for folks to learn the ins and outs of developing for the Livescribe platform.

We always love to hear from you! Check us out on Facebook or Twitter and tell us what you thought of the Maker Faire.

Corsicana ISD Orders 600 smartpens for Credit Recovery Program

June 1st, 2010

Livescribe recently received a 600 Pulse smartpen order from the Corsicana Independent School District in Texas and since they have an interesting plan for their smartpens, we wanted to share their story with you.

The Corsicana Independent School District is planning to use Pulse smartpens to combat the district’s high dropout rates, especially in minority groups. With the national high school dropout rate at roughly 9 percent – and 21 percent for Hispanics – it’s no wonder this eight-school district considers credit recovery a top priority.

In case you’re unfamiliar, credit recovery options allow students to retake courses they haven’t passed, though they’ve met the minimum class time requirement. It’s a pretty common practice to prevent dropouts among high school students since credit recovery lets students finish coursework on a flexible schedule (generally speaking) to earn graduation credits. Corsicana is revamping its entire credit recovery program using the Pulse smartpen.

Marti Shaner, Corsicana’s assistant superintendent, had the idea to assign smartpens to the district’s best teachers in various subject areas. Shaner notes, “Pulse is the best piece technology for the money I’ve seen … it offers more uses than I can think of.” Teachers assigned smartpens are asked to record their lessons and upload the resulting pencasts to the district website, which is being completely redesigned for this program. All lessons with be indexed by subject, grade and state standard, so credit recovery students can easily access teacher instruction. Sometimes just having something explained differently can make all the difference, which is why having multiple teachers record lessons is so helpful! Students can watch the pencast lessons at their own pace, as many times as they need to.

We think this is a very innovative way to address an important issue that is facing school districts across the country and we’ll be keeping a close eye on Corsicana’s program as it develops. Stay tuned for future updates and congratulations to the Corsicana Independent School District for such a great program idea!
