Last Friday our 8 year old daughter Sarah and I spent an extraordinary hour and a half with Lisa Tomberlin – the Vision Specialist for the Monona Grove School District where we live. During this time Lisa showed us some of the tools used by and with students with vision loss and we explored together how the Livescribe smartpen might be used to complement these.
At one point I showed Lisa a Livescribe-enabled Talking Test and she came up with a brilliant idea. She wondered if it might be possible to add a bump to each of the “talking dots” on the Livescribe paper using a tool from the APH Tactile Graphics Kit (which I knew nothing about). …

The University of Rochester now offers notetaking using Livescribe smartpens and notebooks as an accommodation. You can read more about their brand new program here: http://www.rochester.edu/college/las/livescribe.html
We are excited to see more and more institutions recognizing Livescribe’s ability to support unique populations. Smartpen loaner programs are highly cost effective and becoming easier to implement, especially since a few universities like the University of Rochester have created helpful documents (e.g., Lecture Recording Conditions) which should shorten the amount of work other programs need to do to offer notetaking using Livescribe technology.

Another great idea shared by a principal from Arizona who shares how her school is using the Livescribe Pulse smartpen! Using a Livescribe Pulse Smartpen and Livescribe notebook the teacher writes a student’s name and records the student reading a grade-level passage. And then, at the next parent-teacher conference the teacher plays the reading so that the parents get a very clear view of their child’s reading skills.
The same format has been used for numerous assessments and antidotal [anecdotal?] recordings to share with the parents. …
