Livescribe-Enabled Talking Test with Pencast Solutions
09/23/09by education poisted in News › Education Trainings , United States | Comments (6)
There are two parts to a Livescribe enabled talking test. Part 1: Share a test which reads questions aloud to students (more slowly and privately if desired). Part 2: Create solutions which explain with voice and writing through a pencast available on the web. This type of assessment will allow your students to have access to your feedback after hours and assess their own progress. The above video narrates this process.
Many thanks to The Math Maker for creating the original talking test screencast and to Jim Dornberg (Mathcasts – handouts and links page on his wiki) and James Socol who collaborated to create the Pencast Embed tool which allows creation of pencast embed code of 3 sizes (I used the Large size above here). See http://jamessocol.com/pencast/ Small pencasts can also be easily embedded using the embed code now available when viewing pencasts on the Livescribe Community.

Hi Tim - I really like this use of the Livescribe pen, especially the storage of papers. Since the pen still works through the plastic sleeve the test wouldn't be damaged or marked if accidentally written on, and it would enable a teacher or helper to store their tests in a large folder with the pen say attached via its case in the front cover. Depending how many pens the school could afford, pens can become a dedicated tool for a specific folder. So when the student needs to complete and item, the teacher just grabs the folder, selects the test and gives the pen to the student. The added bonus is that the student can still use the pen to write their solutions on their own paper or bubble sheet without having to have a second pen/pencil. I can imagine that in some instances a very valuable resource can be set up and shared between schools. For example, folders could be set up in grade level or topic level. I can also see that dedicated netbooks could be used for the storage of solutions and to view and listen to the solutions without using an internet connection.
