We came, we saw, we gave away 200 Pulse smartpens to Cornell!

Friday, September 11th, 2009

For college students, the first couple of weeks in school can mean a bunch of things: moving in, adding/dropping classes,  buying textbooks, catching up with friends, etc.

But at Cornell University, we teamed up with The Cornell Store, the main on-campus bookstore, to give away 200 Pulse smartpens to Cornell students, faculty and staff during the first two weeks of school.

On Thursday, September 3rd – we came, we saw, we gave away all 200 Pulse smartpens to Cornell. The Cornell Store even had a popcorn machine.

Students had a chance to spin our prize wheel to win a smartpen on the spot and by 2:45pm, we ran out of all our Pulse smartpens  (save 10 that we kept for the end-of-the-day raffle) but the line of people continued to stretch and wind through the back of the store. I actually overheard a couple engineering students who were calculating their probability to win a Pulse smartpen through the raffle.

Both Sherina, my partner in crime, and I had a great time. I loved how people reacted when they spun on the “FREE PULSE SMARTPEN” slice on the prize wheel; it reminded me of the Price is Right or Wheel of Fortune. I was also happy to hear from one student how she was having a crappy day yesterday, but winning a Pulse smartpen was exactly what she needed to make it all better.

A big thank you goes to: the Cornell students who took time out of their busy schedule to give smartpen demos to students throughout the day, Leeann and Joan at The Cornell Store who made this event possible, and of course, to everyone who showed up to the event.

Check out our pictures of our big giveaway at Cornell on our Facebook photo album.

A little background history: Cornell University made the most marks, largely due to the Class of 2013, in Livescribe’s Make Your Mark contest on Facebook, beating out over 1,000 other colleges across the nation to win the big giveaway event. Over 3,000 marks were made in total!

Livescribe is at Cornell University this week to give away 200 Pulse smartpens

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – September 1, 2009 – This week, Livescribe Inc. (www.livescribe.com) will be giving away 200 Pulse smartpens to Cornell University, the winning college of their “Map Your College” Facebook contest. Livescribe will be giving the prizes away at the Cornell University Bookstore in Ithaca, NY from 9 a.m. EST to 5 p.m. EST on Thursday, September 3, 2009.

Livescribe’s “Map Your College” Facebook contest encouraged incoming college freshmen to pinpoint their chosen colleges on the interactive Livescribe College map. Entrants were then asked to submit a scholarship entry on how they will “make their mark” and leave a lasting impact on their communities and peers, in 160 characters or less.

Cornell University had over 400 entries, beating the contest’s runner-up, University of Texas at Austin for the win. Cornell University’s class of 2013 was instrumental in this win, placing hundreds of marks on the map which led to an exciting and unexpected head-to-head race to first place.

Beyond the sheer number of entries, the Class of 2013 also showed an incredible amount of ambition and promise in their scholarship entries. Some Cornell University entries included:

  • I will go to Turkey and promote women’s rights in the Middle East.
  • I will win a Nobel Prize in chemistry.
  • I will make my mark by conducting research that will further the knowledge of the human brain and discover new ways to slow down, prevent, or stop memory loss or anything that affects the natural functions of the brain.
  • I would like to use how cancer impacted my family to help other students and to be a positive influence on campus. I started an organization that encourages faith in God when dealing with all medical issues.
  • By penning my first novel, one that illustrates social issues through fictional characters, building the foundation necessary to go to med school, and fomenting great friendships with interesting and dedicated people.

Livescribe’s big giveaway of 200 Pulse smartpens is open to Cornell University students, faculty and staff with two ways to win: First, from Friday, August 21 to Monday, August 31, participants were invited to fill out an entry form at The Cornell Store. 10 winners were selected each day to win a Pulse smartpen.

On Thursday, September 3 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. EST, participants can take a spin on the prize wheel at The Cornell Store to win a Pulse smartpen on the spot. The giveaway is limited to one Pulse smartpen per person.

Changing How Teachers Deliver Instruction and Students Process Class Information

Livescribe Inc. debuted its award-winning Pulse smartpen and mobile computing platform to administrators and educators at the National Educators Computer Conference (NECC). The Pulse smartpen is a computer in a pen that captures everything a person hears and writes and syncs the notes and audio together. Administrators, teachers and students alike can simply tap on their handwritten notes with their smartpen to hear the conversation play back from that exact moment in time.

The notes and audio can be transferred to their computer for backup, search, playback or sharing. This simple-to-use technology provides students with on-demand access to teacher instruction and enables school administrators and teachers to evaluate classroom performance, teaching quality and student progress efficiently and accurately.

“The most effective educational technologies are the ones that require minimal behavioral change on the part of the teacher and the learner,” said Byron Connell, chief marketing officer of Livescribe Inc. “Pulse is as intuitive to use as regular pen and paper with all the power and functionality of a computer.”

For more information on how the Pulse smartpen improves student learning and teaching effectiveness, please visit www.livescribe.com/education. Livescribe is exhibiting at the NECC Conference in Washington, D.C. this week in booth 3260.
