Livescribe Wins SAP TechEd Demo Jam

Friday, October 15th, 2010

We like to toot our own horn from time to time and this week’s win of the SAP TechEd Demo Jam is cause for celebration! Livescribe is dedicated to changing the way people capture, access and share written and spoken information – and thousands of SAP partners, customers and employees were impressed by the strong set of features we presented to them in Berlin earlier this week. At the SAP TechEd, we had a unique opportunity to demo our smartpen solution and preview how Livescribe’s technology can support note taking and collaboration with ink and paper on the document management systems from software maker SAP. In a tight race, the audience acted as a jury and voted Livescribe as the best amongst a number of stunning and electrifying applications. What an honor!

Livescribe Secures $39 Million in Series C Financing Round

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Exciting news for Livescribe today! Overcoming the current state of the economy, we just secured $39 million in our Series C financing round, bringing the total investment in our company to approximately $100 million since our launch in 2007.

Crosslink Capital led the round, joined by Scale Venture Partners, as well as other investments from Qualcomm, TransLink Capital, Presidio Ventures, Keating Capital, and existing investors VantagePoint Venture Partners, Lionhart, and Aeris Capital.

This infusion of funding will be used to expand into new markets, as well as continue to advance the company’s technology platform so we can deliver on our commitment to enhance our communication and collaboration tools. This includes software developed by recently acquired Zoomii Learning, Inc., which allows consumers, educators and business professionals to share notes and audio direct from their notebook as an interactive Pencast PDF and send via email or integrate directly with online applications and services including Google Docs and Facebook.

Stay tuned for more information on our communication and collaboration tools coming later this fall!

Livescribe Launches Echo™ Smartpen

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Attention Livescribe fans!

Today Livescribe announced Echo, the newest addition to its award winning lineup of smartpens! Available in 4GB ($169.95) and 8GB ($199.95) models, Echo captures everything users hear and write and provides quick and accurate access to important information by simply tapping pen to paper.

Not only does Echo feature a sleek, ergonomic design, rubberized grip and standard headphone and USB jacks, several software enhancements were also launched with Echo. Software updates are available for both Pulse and Echo customers and include:

· Launch Line: a new way to access and launch applications in seconds

· Password protection: ensures recorded audio on your smartpen remains private and safe

· Custom smartpen name: name your smartpen (or include contact information) so that when turned on identifying the owner of a smartpen is easy

· Custom notebooks: group and organize notes quickly and easily (similar to creating a playlist in iTunes), which will be available to Mac customers this September

· Pencast import/export: save and share pencast files locally to your desktop or a server. Notes can be sent to others as an integrated audio/notes as an attachment. Anyone with the Livescribe Desktop software (free download online) can now open, view and interact with a native Livescribe file

· Pencast Player from Livescribe on Apple iPad, iPhone and iTouch: enables users to access pencasts anywhere they go with a simple touch (free from the iTunes store later this summer)

With the launch of Echo, we are also previewing new communication and collaboration applications that will be available this fall. Connect software allows users to send notes, audio and Pencast PDFs directly from paper to email addresses, online sites and other popular third-party consumer, education and business applications. Livescribe is also introducing collaboration software, Paper Tablet, that lets consumers communicate in real-time, directly from a Livescribe notebook to a Mac or PC using an Echo smartpen and a standard micro-USB cable.

Dying to get your hands on the latest smartpen from Livescribe? Echo is available now at Best Buy, Amazon.com, all Apple stores, Target, select Staples and Brookstone stores, and online at Livescribe.com.

We’d LOVE to hear what you think about the newest addition to the Livescribe smartpen family. Check us out on Facebook and Twitter to share your thoughts.

Milestone: Livescribe Reaches ½ Million Pencasts

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Livescribe is excited to share a recent milestone in the company’s history… We have hit the ½ Million Pencast mark! That means over 500,000 unique pencasts have been uploaded to the Livescribe Community since we officially announced the technology just over a year ago. This is exciting news, considering we’ve seen an enormous spike in pencasting the last couple months.

In honor of this exciting milestone, we’d like to highlight a few fun pencasts we’ve seen along the way.

Check out this pencast from a Popular Mechanics interview with SpaceX vice president Tom Mueller describing how the merlin rocket engine works and this pencast featuring illustrations of Star Wars characters. The City of Sacramento uses pencasts to share their Town Hall Meeting notes, and we’ve also seen many teachers, like Sue Glascoe, using pencasts to help students with their homework by sharing online modules of their lessons – word for word, diagram by diagram. Additionally, pencasts are used in the university setting and this pencast from a Purdue University student details how to solve mechanical engineering problems.

Interested in even more? This avid smartpen user described Geoffrey Moore’s Crossing the Chasm concept in this pencast and several Pencast interviews were even recorded at the 2009 New York Comic Convention (Spiderman pencast, Ninja Turtle pencast, Joker pencast).

Additionally, many business professionals are sharing their pencasts of meeting notes, client briefs and more privately with colleagues or clients.

Want to upload some of your favorites, but aren’t sure how? Take a look at this blog post for some tips and tricks. If you have a pencast you’d like us to feature, send us a message on Facebook, Twitter or to press@livescribe.com.

Thanks for helping us reach this exciting milestone!

Corsicana ISD Orders 600 smartpens for Credit Recovery Program

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Livescribe recently received a 600 Pulse smartpen order from the Corsicana Independent School District in Texas and since they have an interesting plan for their smartpens, we wanted to share their story with you.

The Corsicana Independent School District is planning to use Pulse smartpens to combat the district’s high dropout rates, especially in minority groups. With the national high school dropout rate at roughly 9 percent – and 21 percent for Hispanics – it’s no wonder this eight-school district considers credit recovery a top priority.

In case you’re unfamiliar, credit recovery options allow students to retake courses they haven’t passed, though they’ve met the minimum class time requirement. It’s a pretty common practice to prevent dropouts among high school students since credit recovery lets students finish coursework on a flexible schedule (generally speaking) to earn graduation credits. Corsicana is revamping its entire credit recovery program using the Pulse smartpen.

Marti Shaner, Corsicana’s assistant superintendent, had the idea to assign smartpens to the district’s best teachers in various subject areas. Shaner notes, “Pulse is the best piece technology for the money I’ve seen … it offers more uses than I can think of.” Teachers assigned smartpens are asked to record their lessons and upload the resulting pencasts to the district website, which is being completely redesigned for this program. All lessons with be indexed by subject, grade and state standard, so credit recovery students can easily access teacher instruction. Sometimes just having something explained differently can make all the difference, which is why having multiple teachers record lessons is so helpful! Students can watch the pencast lessons at their own pace, as many times as they need to.

We think this is a very innovative way to address an important issue that is facing school districts across the country and we’ll be keeping a close eye on Corsicana’s program as it develops. Stay tuned for future updates and congratulations to the Corsicana Independent School District for such a great program idea!
