Teacher/Crimestopper Stops a Bank Robbery and wins a Pulse smartpen from Gizmodo

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Gizmodo recently asked readers to send their most incredible exploding/leaking pen stories, and Gizmodo readers chose their winner of a Pulse 2GB Pro-Pack!

Check out contest winner David S.’s tale– he’s a teacher who stopped a bank robbery with a pen in his shirt pocket. Thanks to our friends at Gizmodo for hosting this contest!

“As a teacher, I have a tendency to carry around a red pen for correcting papers on a very regular basis - most frequently in my front shirt pocket. One afternoon as I was depositing my paycheck inside my local bank, two guys wearing ski masks burst into the bank, waving guns and ordering us all to the ground. I’m not one to take much crap, nor am I a small guy, so I called out to the guys to see if we could work something out.

“Apparently, it startled one of them pretty badly (I suspect they were tripping on something) and he pulled the trigger on the gun. Thankfully, it was pointing - more or less - up, but taking advantage of the situation, I doubled over and collapsed, simultaneously punching myself in the chest where the pen was. As I hoped, it broke, spilling red ink all over my white shirt.

“The would-be robbers, already tripping on something, absolutely flipped out - apparently, killing someone wasn’t something they had planned on doing. They tore out of the bank like bats out of hell, where there were thankfully, several police cars just pulling up, as one of the tellers had hit the silent alarm. Needless to say, I walked away from the incident with merely a slight bruise, and short one red pen.”

For this month’s Popular Mechanics issue, Science and Technology reporter (and Pulse fan) Michael Belfiore tried a different approach in interviewing Tom Mueller from Space Exploration Technologies: A pencast!

That’s right, Michael’s online article included a pencast of Mueller explaining the SpaceX engine his team designed, and how they did it!

A longtime fan of pencasts, Michael wants to know: Should Popular Mechanics include more pencasts in their stories? Let the editors know by adding a comment to his story!
