Tips and Tricks: Uploading to the Livescribe Community

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Welcome to the first in a series of posts designed to help you get the most of your Pulse smartpen! These walkthroughs will guide you through features you may not have discovered yet, or reveal a handy trick you didn’t even know your smartpen could do!

This month it’s back to basics as we show you how easy it is to upload your notes and drawings to the Livescribe Community from Livescribe Desktop from Windows. If you have any tips and tricks to share or suggest, please email Karen at klee @ livescribe.com. Enjoy!

Uploading to the Livescribe Community
Once you transfer all your notes and recordings from your Pulse smartpen to Livescribe Desktop, you have the option to upload either sessions (notes and recordings) or pages (just notes) to the Livescribe Community.

Step 1:
Once you’ve launched Livescribe Desktop, go to “Page Viewer” mode (near the top left of the Livescribe Desktop window). Double-click on a page of your notes. Click on your notes to see your notes animate and hear the recorded audio.

Step 2:
To share these notes, locate the two “Upload” buttons (near the top left of the Livescribe Desktop window). Click “Upload Sessions” to upload both notes and audio or click “Upload Pages” to upload just the written notes. (Note: If you haven’t created a Livescribe Community account yet, you’ll be asked to do so.)

Step 3:
Click on “Livescribe Online” (located in the upper right corner) to view your uploaded files in your My Livescribe page. From there, you can manage and share your notes, drawings, and recordings as Flash movies or PDF files.

Pulse Smartpen Video Review: Wired.com

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Sr. Editor Dylan Tweny at Wired.com just posted a video review of the Pulse smartpen - watch it below!

After showing how the Pulse smartpen works, Dylan gives his verdict: “Bottom line: This is a great pen for students or journalists. It’s also actually a lot of fun for kids. My daughter who is 7 years old loves to play with it while she scribbles all over the page and makes crazy sounds or, draws pictures and tells stories at the same time, so I highly recommend this pen.”

Update: Livescribe Desktop for Mac 1.0

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

A note to our Mac users: Our original plan of releasing Livescribe Desktop for Mac 1.0 on Feb. 17 will be delayed due to some minor software tweaks we discovered last week.

We always want you to have a quality experience when using your Pulse smartpen and Livescribe Desktop, so we felt a few extra weeks to get it right will be worth the wait. As soon as we have a precise date (which we expect to be no later than early March), we will let you know on our blog.

Thanks for your patience!

How They Use Pulse: Kal, Engineer Major

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Post written by Kal S., a junior at UC Berkeley who is proud to be an engineer major. Interested in sharing how you use your Pulse smartpen? Email Karen at klee @ livescribe.com:

Engineering majors have the pleasure of taking classes that have TONS of graphs, equations and strange symbols, so taking notes with my laptop has been out of question since day one. My handwritten notes were useful, but when I was studying for a midterm or a final, I’d come across a few parts of my notes where I thought, “What is this? Did I even write this? What does it mean?”

Hence, I started using the Pulse smartpen. Whenever I come across these “stumpers,” I just tap my notes to have my professor explain it to me all over again, as if I was in a classroom with him. :)

I attend Cal Berkeley, a HUGE school where the typical lecture halls are filled with 200+ students. The Pulse smartpen would work fine if I sat in the front of class, but I like to sit in the back (about 75 feet or so away from the board).

Since I’m too far away from the professor, I need to use the 3D recording headset with my Pulse smartpen, which makes the quality of my audio recordings exponentially better. The downside of using the headset is that I don’t like to wear them in my ears, so I used to hang the ear buds on the edge of my desk. But even then, it was tough to keep the ear buds from moving while I was writing.

So, I made the contraption (see the picture below) with a lot of masking tape and an unwound paper clip. This keeps the 3D recording headset up in the air, and off my desk!
