3/28 Update from CEO Jim Marggraff

Greetings,

I would like to thank the thousands of readers, writers, bloggers, callers, developers, scribers and buyers for your support and interest in our Pulse smartpen and platform.

We have been overwhelmed with requests for information and preorders for Pulse that have far exceeded our early projections.

As this demand has accelerated in the past month, we have continued working towards our first shipment date of March 31st, and have struggled to determine how to address preorders that far exceed our early production ramp. We noted Amazon’s approach to handling shipment for their high-demand Kindle e-book, and ongoing Wii shortages, and have compared this to our own challenge, as a new company, to address our backlog.

In retrospect, our hiatus in our communication is long overdue. I apologize for this. As I considered posting a blog entry numerous times, new concerns regarding growing demand arose, as well as meeting our growing backlog. Perhaps we were overly cautious in not wanting to send an ambiguous message.

The time for ambiguity is past.

I am delighted to announce that we will begin shipping in limited volume on March 31st, as targeted.

To address our backlog, we will open the Livescribe Store only to our preorder list of customers, enabling you to immediately place a credit card order on Monday. At that time, we will provide you with an estimated shipment date based upon when you first preordered your smartpen. If you are already on our preorder list, look for an email on Monday, March 31st with instructions on how to complete your order.

    How is shipping going to work? I’m assuming you will not charge the card until the shipment actually takes place, correct?

    What methods of shipping will you have available? What, by your estimation, is the longest someone who preordered in January have to wait?

    You think you’re excited, I have waited since last years D4 first announcement. I have multiple rss feed and google alerts set up in order catch the latest news. I must have pre-ordered a half a dozen times and passes along the website’s address 1000 times. I can’t wait to have it in had because my students will immediately want one, and I can feel a sense of pride for directing them to something I think is the new frontier in marriage between the digital, the tactile, and the auditory.     Congratulations to everyone who made this possible. I’m personally thrilled and scared, all at once:

    Thrilled = Here comes my Smartpen

    Scared = I know I submitted my pre-order many months ago, but was it early enough to get in the first shipment wave?

    I had what I thought was a relaxing, enjoyable weekend planned. It will all now pass interminably. I can already tell: I’ll be involuntarily willing that email into my inbox, seeing myself entering my credit card digits…

    I am very eager to know roughly when Canadian residents will be able to place an order. I understand that you would have to deal with your backlog of US orders first. Are there Canadian regulation compliance issues (CRTC, ULC etc.) that need approval before it can be offered to Canadians? Any information on this subject would be appreciated.

    Thank you for the update on the introduction of the Pulse pen. It appears as though your team’s engineering and business development expertise and persistence is about to make a significant contribution to learning and communication.

    While using older digital pen technology, I have found people regularly asking me about the concepts. When I describe the soon-to-become-available Livescribe technology, their interest and the questions increases dramatically. This I have found not only among students, but business meeting participants, field researchers, data collectors, and distance learning participants.

    In addition to personally using the Smartpen, I am very much looking forward to working with the development tools and exploring the possibilities.

    I am still puzzled about the excitement expressed here by some people, while almost none of the technical questions related to the SmartPen have been answered -people are buying a snake oil, people are betting their money for some product which hasn’t been reviewed independently: all we saw are promo videos and orchestrated demos and carefully selected hyped reviews from (maybe) beta testers…

    I am wondering why none of the beta testers share their opinions regarding the pen and the software directly in the blog - are they all under NDA? Have any of the well known journalists/bloggers been given the SmartPen for review? where/when can we read those reviews?

    I work for a Xerox agency and we have talked for months about how this could change what we do. I look forward to tomorrow with great anticipation!! There is so much ambiguity at this point that it will be good to see the things we can do and customize. Thanks for the update.

    I’m really concerned about how the pre-order thing is going to work. I signed up for pre-order in November or December, then I got a message through facebook with a coupon code in January. I hope when I filled out the pre-order thing again to enter the coupon code it didn’t bump me back in line.

    I preordered using both my personal and work email addresss. Once, way back in November and again in February. I didn’t get an email in either account and, when I went and followed the link in the posted email and signed up for an account, it didn’t find either address in the preorders….FRUSTRATING!!! I may have to boycott the darn thing just because…. They can’t seem to get their act together!
