A Note From Jim

Just wanted to drop a note to say hello from all of us at Livescribe and welcome to our company blog.

At Livescribe, we’ve combined the four basic modes of human communication – reading, writing, speaking and listening – into a device the form and function of a pen. By connecting the digital world with a simple piece of paper, this smartpen allows you to better capture, access, and share information and ideas in a totally new way.

As we head towards launch, we welcome you to share with us your feedback, thoughts and ideas. I’ll do the same.

So standby. We’re working intensely, towards our launch and product availability in early 2008, and are pleased to kick off a dialogue – first with keystrokes on your computer screen, and soon with ink and voice – wherever!

Even though I want eee PC when it becomes available in the US, I still want a pen computer. When I write a report, essay, or short story I prefer pen and paper. A pen computer will save me the time it takes to transcribe what I’ve written on the computer.

Looking forward to learning more about Livescribe. I just hope that Livescribe Ink will be available in black, and that it will be available in office supply stories.

Thank you so much for updating us on your progress. I have been checking back daily to see when I will be able to purchase the LiveScribe. I have already put in to reserve a pen for me via the web site but I really can’t wait until they are readily available for everyone as I want all of my students to purchase one of these.

I have been teaching for 12 years now and every year the note taking skills of our students diminishes. Often time my students (I teach math) get home and can’t remember what to do on certain problems. Their notes are not the greatest so they will either give up or try it and not find success. Either way a learning opportunity was lost. I know this pen will help all students from my weakest to my strongest in ALL of their classes not just mine. In fact I work closely with a team of teachers across all disciplines and our group can not wait to start using this pen.

I see the LiveScribe helping our special education population the most of all of our students. I currently have 4 students that do not have the manual dexterity in their hands to take notes. I also have students that have difficulty processing the lectures while at the same time taking notes. In order to accommodate them I have peers take notes for them which is great. However having peers take notes for them using the LiveScribe will be life changing.

Bravo LiveScribe. Please keep us up-to-date and I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of this pen.

thank you for the heads up…. cant wait to trial it with my older students…some even older than me….and I turned 70 on the second of this month. I help fellow retirees to use computers in their everyday lives.

I hope to include this in mine

I hope I can persuade your sales department no to discriminate against Canadians for the pre-order.
IWhen it arrives I will seek to interface with music notation software - unless someone else is working on it!

  5. Eric Wang says:

I’m waiting for the pen so long time, I note that you delay the launch time from Q4 of 2007 to Q1 of 2008. Anyway, please do your best to speed up the process to launch it ASAP.
I’d like to get it as the first one in China.

    Thanks.

  6. Eric Wang says:

How to order (pre-order) the pen from China? Is it not available?!

  7. Jamie Sell says:

I hope it comes out on the market soon, I have been waiting for something like this!

  8. Barnaby says:

    Dear Jim,
I have been keenly interested in LiveScribe ever since I first heard about it several months ago. Trouble is, I don’t live in the USA (I am currently resident in France, and will be spending a month in Dubai early next year). Do you have plans to make the LiveScribe available outside the States? I’m sure you’d have a big market!
Wishing you the very best of luck with your venture which deserves to succeed.

I’m looking forward to seeing this product, but why do you always talk about your launch dates in terms of business quarters? How about January, or even Winter 2008? Seems more consumer friendly and would help us really understand when we could finally get our hands on one of these cool pens!

  10. Jan says:

This smartpen is surely the best answer in educational technology (for students and teachers).
Why should I use a tablet PC ? this pen can do more, better and at an affordable price !

Keep up the good work !
    Jan

PS : the price of the smartpen will be less than 200$ : do you mean 199.99 $ ?
    :-)

  11. Jamie says:

    Dear Jim,

The technology looks fantastic. I spend most of my work day meeting with clients, and feel that there is tremendous potential for Livescribe in the business world. I do have a couple of questions / concerns regarding the day to day use of Livescribe. How do you carry the pen? I did not see any type of clip or a top. Does the ink cartridge retract? Also, what kind of ink cartridges will be available? Parker Gel refills are a personal favorite. I also noted that the recharge station is hortizontal. I think that you are missing a major design cue. Desktop pen holders are at a 45 degree angle for a reason.

  12. Jason Fu says:

I am using IO2 and PLY Pen now. The problem is the digital paper. They are not inter changable. Both of these paper bear Anoto logo. I wonder what kind of paper this smartpen will use. What kind of software this pen support? It is exciting to wait this kind of product.

  13. klee says:

Jason - Livescribe is committed to serving both the Windows and Macintosh platforms. The first release of the Livescribe Desktop software is for Windows XP and Vista operating systems only. A Macintosh version of the Livescribe Desktop is planned for 2H 2008.

Note to all - we will be creating a FAQ for recurring questions we find on the blog comments. We appreciate your comments and suggestions!

  14. klee says:

In response to a couple questions about product availability - at launch in Q1 2008, the Livescribe smartpen will be available in the U.S. market for purchase online. Details on our international distribution plans will be announced later.

I haven’t been this enthusiastic about a new product since the PC!! I am a Real Estate broker/closing coordinator in Fl. Many times I deal with people who do not remember what was told to them, and with those who do not speak English. I have been concerned for a long time about customers making committments in transactions when they do not fully understand the contracts. This will revolutionize my world, and probably the entire world. Thank you, and I can hardly wait…

  16. Andreas Geitz says:

Any one know what languages this pen comes with? Swedish perhaps?

  17. Rebecca Bonarek says:

    Mr. Marggraff,

Your LiveScribe system interested and impressed me and my speech coach so much that I’m going to do an Informative Speech for my college Forensics team. We compete all across the country in both local and national tournaments, and I can’t wait to present this new technology to everyone. However, I do have a few lingering questions, but I don’t know the best/most effective way to contact anyone involved with the project, preferably you yourself. I will be emailing both the media and general information centers, so hopefully we will be in contact soon about this brilliant innovation.

    Sincerely,
    Rebecca Bonarek

  18. Trevor says:

    Wow!

thats all I can say. I am a little whirry on if I should go with the first release of the digital pen. I play around with lots of computer hardware an software and I know that the first release always has some tweaks after the release. But I am totally amazed at how well this is going to fit in my pocket and in the classroom. I am going to love this little gizmo. One great idea and you’ve created success. good job!

Michael, my son in law school, noted he sure wished Santa would bring him a Livescribe for Xmas. As I was trying to find out what video game that was, I found out he was interested in an absolutely delightful product on your web site. I now have thoughts how Livescribe could be used in a medical practice without spending $100,000 for a electronic medical records program. You are on the right track. Joseph B MD

  20. FSpiller says:

Thank you all for your comments. Continue to visit our website as we get closer to announcing our product launch.

  21. Ian says:

I hope there’s going to be music staff paper available.

Is the software that ships with the pen going to allow for printing of the dot-paper? I remember seeing this mentioned on the website.

Is there a chance a pencil refill could be designed? Pencil graphite lasts a lot longer than ink.

    Thanks.

  22. Krysta Salera says:

regarding the pen , how does it work if you make a mistake while writing. what i mean is if you use white out and then write again will it still get it ot will the little dots be covered? it would be great if you answer, thanks
